Fun in the Sun: Bummis Swimmi Diaper Review

Hi, Amy here, and I am back with another product review for our Fun in the Sun Event: Bummis Swimmi! We live on the coast and consequently my kids get into the water pretty early in life. John went swimming at 3 weeks and LOVED it! (I wish I had a picture, but I did not remember the camera that day.)

The Bummis Swimmi is a great cloth swim diaper. The hook and loop closure allows for maximum size adjustment. The diaper is also great at containing messes! I was uncertain if it would be able to contain the liquid poop of a breastfed newborn, but it does! It is also one of the few swim diapers (cloth or disposable) available that would fit John at 3 weeks of age!The small size is supposed to fit an infant 9-15 lbs. However, I found that it fit John by the time he reached 8 lbs. John is actually a little over 15 lbs now, and you can see that the diaper still fits and still has a fair amount of room for expansion!

You can purchase a Swimmi for your little one at www.bummis.com

Catchick6 Creations custom wool shorties giveaway!

Hi, Lisa here with a great giveaway from Catchick6 Creations!  Elizabeth at Catchick6 Creations sent me a custom wool shortie with a sock monkey applique on it, and I have to say it is one of the cutest things I have ever seen!  She designs her own appliques and makes truly unique and fun clothing for children to wear!  You can see some of her current designs on her custom longies listing and her  custom shorties listing, and here is the adorable one she sent me:

Not only did she make these with my choice of fabric and design, but she also took Davey’s measurements and made it to fit him!  However, she asked if I wanted elastic in the waist or not, and I told her no, and with how stretchy this wool was it was actually just a little big for Davey when I got it.  I definitely recommend having her put elastic in it!  It would have fit perfectly if not for that.  So I waited a little while to try it out, and it fits Davey just fine now and works great as a diaper cover with no leaks!  It is very well made, and she even lanolized it for me, which is great because that is something I have not done before.

I really enjoyed working with Elizabeth at Catchick6 Creations to work out the details on my custom shorties and on the giveaway she is sponsoring!  She has offered to send one lucky winner a custom wool shortie with one of her current designs!

Mother-ease One-Size Cloth Diaper and Air Flow Cover giveaway!

Hi, Lisa here with a great cloth diaper giveaway!  Mother-ease Cloth Diapers started out when Erika and Rick Froese’s son, Sandy, was born, with the design of their All In One cloth diaper.  They later found the need to design a diaper for heavy wetters, and they made the Sandy’s fitted cloth diaper, which I have tried and must say it really does work well for a heavy wetter!  Later they decided to make a One Size Cloth Diaper that folds down to reveal a second row of snaps to make it fit from birth through potty training.  This has been their best-selling cloth diaper!  I have had the chance to try out the Mother-ease One-Size Cloth Diaper over the last month or so, along with the Mother-ease Air Flow cover, which was designed because other covers were not made to fit well over the Mother-ease cloth diapers.  The sale of Mother-ease cloth diapers dates back to 1991 when they worked out of their basement at home, first only available in Canada, but they soon made them available to Europe and their best sales were from Germany and Austria.  Mother-ease cloth diapers became available in the United States in 1995.

Mother-ease One Size Cloth Diapers are available in cotton terry, organic cotton terry, bamboo terry, and cotton terry with stay-dry fabric sewn to the inside.  I have been trying out a cotton terry one and have been very impressed with how absorbent it is!  Cotton has become my favorite material in cloth diapers lately; there are no stink issues like you get with microfiber, and it is soft and very absorbent.   The Mother-ease One Size Cloth Diaper has a snap-in insert and folds down to adjust the diaper to fit from approximately 8.5 pounds to 35 pounds.  It also has cross over tabs to fit your tiny newborn.  You can see pictures of how the Mother-ease One Size Cloth Diaper fits on different size babies here:  One Size Fit.  It fits Davey on the large setting.  At first I was worried about the row of snaps on the inside possibly leaving snap marks, but the snap-in insert covers that row of snaps and we’ve not had any problems with snap marks.

The Mother-ease Air Flow Diaper Cover is a breathable cover with adjustable snaps at the waist and legs.  It has an air ventilation system between the snaps to allow for maximum air flow while baby moves.  The Mother-ease Air Flow Cover is a sized cover and is made to fit with the Mother-ease One Size Diaper or Sandy’s Fitted Diaper.  It comes in different colors and 5 cute prints!  We’ve had no leaks while using the Mother-ease One Size Diaper and Air Flow Cover.  The only complaint I have is it is a little snug around Davey’s thighs, but that is a problem we have with most diapers and covers and probably is not a normal issue with this cover with most babies.

Mother-ease Cloth Diapers has offered to send one lucky winner an introductory package with a Cotton Terry One Size Cloth Diaper and an Air Flow Cover in your choice of size and color or print.

  • Check out the Mother-ease Air Flow Cover and tell me which print or color you would choose if you win.

Doopsy Cloth Diaper Giveaway

Hi Amy here. Now that I have two kids in diapers, I am having great fun reviewing one size diapers and trying them out on both of my kids! It is really neat to be able to see how the diaper will fit on a little one and how it will continue to perform on an older child! Our second one size diaper review and giveaway, brought to you by Jessica and John, is the Doopsy Cloth Diaper! Unfortunately, this will also be the last cloth diaper giveaway in which both Jessica and John participate in product testing because Jessica up and decided that she was done with diapers!!!

The Doopsy Cloth Diaper is a pocket diaper that comes in 5 bright colors with many different options to meet the needs of the many different cloth diapering families! The “R” style diaper comes with two 4 layer microfiber inserts for just $14.95! This should take most babies from 10 lbs to at least 35 lbs and is easier on the budget than many other pocket diapers available! The “D” style diaper comes with one 4 layer microfiber insert AND a Doopsy PUL insert/bamboo soaker to give you extra protection from leaks all for just $15.95! This unique insert/soaker can also be easily adjusted to fit infants between 10 and 35 lbs as well. Finally the “SD” style diaper comes with one 4 layer microfiber insert, a Doopsy PUL insert/bamboo soaker, AND an extra bamboo/hemp absorbency pad all for just $16.95! Exceptional absorbency, leak protection, and a trim fit with a variety of price options available! This is truly one of the most versatile cloth diapers on the market!

Unlike the last time I got a diaper made with bamboo in the mail, this time I remembered to boil the diaper BEFORE using it! The absorbency is absolutely awesome, AND you still get a great trim fit! I also love all of the different options! The Doopsy Cloth Diaper is a great diaper, especially for parents with multiple children in cloth diapers or parents who are looking for a cheaper pocket diaper without sacrificing quality! After using the diaper with both of my children at night and during the day, I only have one complaint and that is the snaps. I have only recently started using diapers with snaps as opposed to hook and loop. Of all the snap diapers I have tried so far, the Doopsy Cloth Diaper gives the best fit. However, I think that you get the best fit with hook and loop because you are not quite as limited as to where the tabs must be attached. However, I also realize that snaps are more durable so it just depends on the family.

Now you can enter to win a Doopsy SD style cloth diaper!

Required entry:

  • Go to the Doopsy website and tell me what you like best about this diaper!
  • Must be following Mommy and Me Giveaways via Google Friend Connect to enter.
  • Also, be sure to give us your email address (You can leave it in name (at) email (dot) com format if you would like).

Bummis Easy Fit Cloth Diaper Giveaway

Hi Amy here. Now that I have two kids in diapers (although Jessica is mostly only in diapers for naps and bedtime), I am having great fun reviewing one size diapers and trying them out on both of my kids! It is really neat to be able to see how the diaper will fit on a little one and how it will continue to perform on an older child! Our first one size diaper review and giveaway, brought to you by Jessica and John, is the Bummis Easy Fit!

I was a little skeptical about this diaper in the beginning; however, now the Bummis Easy Fit has become my go-to diaper for John overnight! The first time we used it, I was running out the door on the way to the hospital with contractions due to a virus. I had no clean, dry diapers, and this one had just come in the mail. I ripped it out of the packaging and stuffed it in the bag without reading the instructions. When we picked Jessica up on the way home from the hospital that night, she was absolutely soaked! I came home and read the instructions and realized my mistake, the soaker was made of bamboo and must be washed in hot water several times before use!!! Oops! I started washing it in hot water, but I got impatient and decided to go with the “quickie” method of boiling it in a pan on the stove for about 20 minutes. It worked great! However, I must say my husband was rather confused when he saw a diaper “cooking” on the stove when he got home from work!

The Bummis Easy Fit is a great pocket diaper that comes in 5 bright cheerful colors as well as a bright white! It is made to fit little ones 8-35 pounds. The absorbent liner is made of soft bamboo with a layer of microfiber for ultimate absorption with minimal bulk! Also as you can see, the liner can be fold and tucked into the pocket to increase absorption; however, it will pull out in the wash to minimize mess and drying time! All around the absorbent liner is brushed polyester to prevent leaks and wicking! I also noticed that the PUL fabric on the outside seems particularly durable. The side of it on the inside of the pocket actually almost feels like plastic it is so durable!  The velcro type tabs are particularly fabulous! The velcro is very strong and folds over. The tabs never come undone in the wash or dryer like some other brands!! The velcro is also generously sized which makes it more durable. I was pleased to see that they also offer a Tiny Fit for infants 5-12 pounds! John ended up in disposables the first two weeks because none of the diapers I had bought fit him yet, or if they did, I had trouble working around the umbilical cord! (Definitely something I need to work on before we have another baby!) The Bummis Easy Fit also seems to be a very “green” diaper. The Easy Fit Diaper is manufactured in a factory in Glasgow, Scotland from environmentally friendly fabrics. The rayon from bamboo fibres as well as the dye are Oeko-tex certified and the bamboo fibre is produced in a “closed loop” system which recycles water and chemical output to ensure sustainability.

The Bummis Easy Fit is a very trim fitting diaper. I love how it fits on John and also how absorbent it is! This is the diaper I reach for every night! The Bummis Easy Fit also fits Jessica quite nicely; however, I do have to add an extra insert if she is using it overnight. That is actually my one complaint. I wish the diaper came with a booster that could be added for an older child overnight. I have other inserts I could use, but most of my inserts are microfiber and sometimes they will start to stink even after I have washed them. I have not noticed any lingering smells with the attached bamboo liner in the Bummis Easy Fit!

You can find Bummis on their website, Facebook, Twitter, and their Blog.

Urban Fluff iCandy giveaway!

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I have had a lot of frustration with cloth diapering, mostly due to my son’s chunky thighs…  I have gotten lucky with a few of our giveaway diapers that work well for Davey, and the Urban Fluff iCandy diaper is another great diaper that works well for us!  The iCandy is an innovative 3-part diapering system, somewhat similar to a couple of other popular brands, but so much cuter and stylish!  The iCandy comes in 2 sizes – Infant (birth to 20lb) and Toddler (15 to 35lb) for optimal fit.  I was a little skeptical when seeing that, as another reason I have had frustration with cloth diapers is Davey’s long rise, but the toddler size does fit him very well, though it has a lower rise than what I usually prefer.  The elastic is stretchy enough that I do believe this diaper could fit him until potty training though!

So how does this 3-part diapering system work?  The iCandy is made up of 3 parts – iCandy wrapper, waterproof snap-in liner, and a contoured, quilted soaker.  The iCandy wrapper has a cotton print outer that comes in so many cute designs, and a soft micro-chamois inner.  The snap-in waterproof liner also has micro-chamois binding around the edges, so no red marks or irritation on baby’s skin.  The soaker is made of 3 layers of microterry, topped with soft microfleece.  These are truly economical diapers.  You can just buy a few iCandy wrappers, and several snap-in liners and soakers and you’re all set!  When baby is wet, simply change the soaker and wipe out the snap-in liner.  If the snap-in liner is soiled, you can snap in a new one with a fresh soaker.  You hardly ever have to change the wrapper!  Urban Fluff’s savings calculator says it is possible to cloth diaper with the iCandy from birth through potty training for only $300, saving up to $3000 over disposables!

The iCandy has snap closures, which is great because Davey has not figured out how to take off snap diapers yet!  Also they are super durable and you don’t have diaper chains in the laundry!  Though the snaps are not exactly “hidden snaps”, the snap-in liner covers them, so I have had no problems with snap marks on Davey.  The iCandy also held up well when I tried it overnight.  The soaker is very absorbent and there was no wicking.  I will admit I was a little skeptical about their no-wick guarantee because of the micro-chamois binding on the snap-in liner being against the wrapper, but it truly does not wick as long as you make sure the soaker is tucked in well.

Urban Fluff has offered to send one iCandy diapering system to 1 lucky winner!

Required entry: Check out the iCandy prints and tell me which one is your favorite.

Envibum Diapers Giveway

Hi, Amy here again with another great cloth diaper giveaway!! Envibum sent Lisa two diapers recently to review. She ended up sending them to us to try out due to their trouble with fitting Davey’s chunky thighs! I am really excited about this giveaway because these diapers are really different from most of the other cloth diapers we have tried and they come from a fabulous company! Envibum is a team of Work-at-Home Moms, Dads, and Grandparents! Rachel, who started Envibum, is a mother of 3 (with a fourth due next month)! She has been sewing for 20 years and felt God calling her to create Envibum to not only help other parents cloth diaper their little ones but also to compassionately give to those in need. In fact, $2 of every diaper sold through their company goes to organizations like: Food for the Hungry, Living Water International, Crisis Pregnancy Center, or Salvation Army. For every diaper cover sold, one is given to a mom in need. Their company is built on a strong foundation of integrity. They are definitely a company I feel comfortable supporting with my business! Let’s start by looking at the first diaper: the Envigreen Cloth Diaper!

This is a one-size, all-in-one, pocket diaper. The outside is plush, cuddly minkee. The interior is 100% unbleached cotton with absorbency channels (think waffle knit). Between the outside and interior is a PolyUrethane Laminate (PUL) waterproofing layer. The diaper comes with one 100% unbleached cotton absorbency pad, although you can purchase extras separately. The Envigreen Cloth Diaper should fit children 8-40 lbs with measurements of Rise: 13” – 19”, Waist: 9” – 25”, and Leg: 6” – 17.”

There are several neat things about the Envigreen Cloth Diaper. First of all, there are no snaps or elastic to adjust. You just velcro the diaper on to fit your child and go! It really does work, although you may have trouble fitting it to a particularly petite newborn. I really like the fact that the interior is 100% unbleached cotton! You have all heard me talk before about how much I love to use cotton diapers on Jessica’s sensitive skin because it breathes so well (that and it is soooo easy to launder)!!!! The waffle interior seems to really help with absorbency! I was rather skeptical when we put Jessica to bed one night in it with only one absorbency pad. Amazingly, after 12 hours on my heavy soaker, the diaper had only just begun to leak!! I was quite impressed!! I have never had results like that out of a cotton diaper! Typically we use microfiber or hemp overnight. Many of you will also enjoy this feature: you do not have to remove the absorbency pad when washing! If you choose to dry them in a dryer, I would recommend pulling the absorbency pad out, just so that it will dry faster though. Also, we have not experienced any stink issues with this diaper thus far! Jessica also really likes this diaper! She picked it out herself that night when we were putting her to bed! (We think she thought it made her look like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle…..yes, my little girl has recently become obsessed with the original cartoon series!)

This is how the diaper looked after she had slept in it for 12 hours and it finally started leaking!

Next we have the Mom4Mom Diaper Cover with T-Shaped Liner. This is the ultimate way to diaper your baby on a dime without the leaks! This cover is truly a rinse and reuse cover! There are no seams, elastic, or cloth (other than PolyUrethane Laminate) for urine or poop to get stuck in! (However, it can be washed and dried on any setting as well.) You can use it over the 100% unbleached cotton T-Shaped Liner or over any other form of absorbency you may have around your house: prefolds, rags, towels, liners from other diapers, etc. Both the cover and the liner are made to fit children 8-40 lbs with no snaps or elastic to adjust! I really like this idea, and it definitely meets a need. Rachel tells a story about a friend who visited South America and saw mothers rinsing out disposable diapers to use as a diaper cover because they did not have enough diapers. Obviously washing cloth diapers can be a problem if you are in an area with a very limited water supply. That is actually why the velcro used is brown. If you rinse it in muddy river water, it will not leave the diaper looking filthy.

The Mom4Mom Diaper Cover with T-Shaped Liner is a great daytime diaper in and of itself. With added absorbency pads, it would be fine overnight as well. The only reason I might be hesitant to use this diaper cover year-round as my only diaper cover is Jessica’s sensitive skin. Whiles PolyUrethane Laminate (PUL) does breathe better than plastic, I still try to avoid using it right next to her skin. However, I have met very few other people who have that problem, so this may be a great, frugal option for you, while allowing you to help out other moms at the same time! Jessica seemed to like this diaper as well and even played outside for a while in it with no heat rash!

Overall, I absolutely LOVE Envibum and think they offer some great diapers that really fill a need. I particularly like how easy these diapers are to care for and how they easily adjust to your growing child (or multiple children). I also really like the fact that they use cotton (and that they are able to get the cotton absorbency pads to absorb so much)!

You can find Envibum on their website, Facebook, Twitter, and their Blog.

Envibum has offered to send one of our followers an Envibum Diaper (with absorbency pad) and a Mom4Mom Diaper Cover (with T-Shaped Liner)!

Required entry: Check out Envibum and tell me your favorite organization that Envibum sales support.

Happy Heinys giveaway!

I have had a big problem finding one-size diapers that will not only fit Davey now, but possibly fit through potty training!  He really is not a very large baby, actually he is under the 50th percentile in both weight and height!  But I think the trunk of his body is longer than most babies, plus he is a little chubby, with extremely chubby thighs and this has made buying diapers quite difficult!  We actually never have a problem with them fitting in the waist, there is always room to grow there; however, they tend to be too short in the rise or fit him just right in the rise so that if he grows any taller they will not fit.  So not too long ago I started asking around on a cloth diaper message board, listing some of the diapers I have tried that either do not fit anymore or will most likely not fit until potty training, and asking for advice on other diapers to try.

Somebody recommended Happy Heinys, telling me that the rise is longer than another leading brand that Davey outgrew a long time ago, but they are very similar diapers.  This sounded good because I was very sad when Davey outgrew that other brand!  So I emailed Happy Heinys inquiring about their one-size diapers, telling them about my dilemma with one-size diapers not fitting Davey, and giving his measurements and I asked if they thought their diapers would work for him.  They decided to send me a one-size diaper to try out for myself!  When it came in the mail I immediately tried it on Davey and was so happy!  It fits him on a medium setting, so he has plenty of room to grow!

Davey in his Happy Heinys

Happy Heinys one-size diaper is a pocket diaper that is made to fit from birth to potty training.  There are snaps on the front to adjust the rise that allow for 4 different sizes for your diaper!  It has an outer layer of PUL, which is available in many colors and adorable prints.  The inner layer is Happy Heinys‘ own custom milled fleece, and I have to say it is one of the softest diapers I have owned!

The Happy Heinys one-size diaper comes with 2 microfiber inserts — one small and one large.  I have been using the large insert for daily use, and I use both inserts at night.  Davey generally sleeps 12-13 hours at night, and we have not had any leaks at all from this diaper.  Actually most mornings, the inserts are not even completely soaked!

Happy Heinys has many other products, such as a one-size diaper with snaps, mini one-size diapers, pocket diapers, fitted diapers, diaper covers, training pants, and more!  You can find Happy Heinys on Facebook and on Twitter @happyheinys.

Happy Heinys has offered to send one of our lucky followers their own Happy Heinys one-size diaper!

Diaper Junction BabyKicks giveaway!

Diaper Junction is one of my favorite cloth diaper stores!  They usually have in stock the products that I want, and the best thing about them is they have rewards points for your purchases which add up to redeem for gift certificates!  I have bought a lot of  cloth diapers at Diaper Junction (which means I have gotten a lot of gift certificates as well!)  Diaper Junction has excellent customer service and are prompt to respond to any questions or requests.  Also they have their own blog, the Cloth Diaper Blog, which has lots of great articles, reviews, and giveaways!

Diaper Junction recently sent me one of their new items — a BabyKicks one-size organic fitted diaper!  This is truly a one-size diaper that should fit from birth to potty training with all the different ways to adjust the fit of the diaper!  It has color-coded snaps for easy adjustment, and not only does it have 3 sets of snaps to adjust the rise, but also it is a pocket fitted, and the pocket opens in the front, which means you can fold the front down inside out to make it as small as you need it for a newborn.  Then you would just lay it in a cover and not snap it.   It comes with a BabyKicks Hemparoo Joey Bunz hemp insert which is super absorbent!  I have used this diaper several times overnight with the insert and have not had any nighttime leaks!  Here is a video to show all the different ways to adjust the diaper to fit your baby:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23rjK9HulT8&feature=player_embedded]

The BabyKicks one-size organic fitted is a side-snapping diaper which I really like!  It has 3 snap settings on each side and I have been able to get a perfect fit with Davey on the middle snap-setting with room to grow!  The elastic in the back is very stretchy which I think helps to ensure a good fit.  This diaper is made from 50% organic cotton for its softness, 33% hemp for its super absorbency, and 17% polyester for stretchiness that a fitted diaper needs.

Davey wearing his BabyKicks (and obviously not wanting his picture taken!)

Diaper Junction has agreed to send one of our lucky followers a BabyKicks organic cotton fitted diaper!
